Sequential Art and Character Designs

One of my first passions consumed me at the age of 6. My father promised me and delivered my very first comic book (Amazing Spider-Man #178, I believe). From those first wonderful moments I knew I had comics in my future in some form or fashion. I would spend hours creating my own comic books on folded-stapled 8.5 x 11 pieces of typing paper, then drawing in the characters, coloring them with my brother's color pencils, then lettering in the dialogue. (foolishly I actually took a couple and sold them to a classmate for a whopping 50 cents because that was the going rate for professional comic books).

Fantasy

One of my co-workers was a huge MERP (Middle Earth Role Play) fan when the online version was still in it's infancy. Anyhoo, she asked me to do an illustration of her character which I did...and have now posted for everyone else to see as well. Ironically, this was the first Prismacolor piece I had done in about 5 years at that point and was also the LAST Prismacolor piece I finished prior to switching to an all digital approach.

Some Logo work

Below is a logo design for a high-end travelers meeting place bistro intended for downtown Memphis. Ultimately the logo was not utilized, but I still really liked the feel...

Below are a few of the logos I designed for
the WC Handy Performing Arts Park in downtown Memphis.

Action!

Here's a few items I really enjoyed working on.

The Scenario: Having left my former place of employment, I found myself suddenly wondering. "okay...now what?" So like any dutiful illustrator, I hit the streets, portfolio in hand to hit up any contact I might have had. 3 days and 12 interviews later I was sitting on a big goose egg and really didn't want to tell the wife I had struck out again. On a lark (or was it Divine desperation) I walked into a cold-call visit at a local newspaper, "The Memphis Flyer" that specialized in a more... unique market. I was lucky enough to catch the Editor for they paper's special round-up Best Of... edition and lucky for me, she was still looking for an artist to do the sectional illustrations. I showed her my portfolio and whattayaknow...10 minutes I had the commission.

I had to produce all 12 within 48 hours.

Those were the best 48 hours.

PAPERJAMS

Seems like I've spent half of my adult life on the computer, using the computer, cursing at the computer and then loving the computer. If you are reading this right now, I'm sure you know what I mean. It's a definite love / hate relationship. PAPERJAMS is my little notes of insight to the madness that is advertising, clients, corporate life, deadlines, computers
and whatever might catch my attention.
